Dangote is the richest man in Africa through his various business ventures such as Dangote Cement. But he was also recently ranked in the Top 100 people in the World by Time magazine for his work in helping to eradicate Polio in Northern Nigeria.
Forbes describes Dangote:
“Heralded by some as the face of the new Nigeria, Africa’s richest man is looking beyond cement, sugar and flour — the three commodities that built his fortune — to the oil business… He made his first fortune more than three decades ago when he started trading commodities with a loan from his powerful uncle.”
Dangote was nominated alongside Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, world-renowned Nigerian author who penned Half a Yellow Sun; Thuli Madonsela, a South African advocate and the nation’s Public Protector; Donald Kaberuka, a Rwandan economist and the president of the African Development Bank; and Arunma Oteh, who was appointed the director-general of the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2010.
Previous Nigerian winners of the award include  Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2011 and Akinwumi Adesina, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development for Nigeria in 2013.
